Hair loss is a common problem that men and women around the world have to deal with. The causes for hair loss, however, can differ from one person to person. From something as basic as lack of nutrition to an underlying illness and intense treatments like chemotherapy, a number of factors can be responsible for loss of hair. What exactly is the cause for your hair loss depends on your lifestyle, the environment and the climate of the region you live in, the kind of water you use and so on.

What Causes Hair Loss?

There are 4 primary factors that can be responsible for hair loss, regardless of the lifestyle and the climatic conditions of a region.

  1. Heredity. One of the most common reasons for hair loss in men and women is simply heredity. People lose hair due to male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness that starts with thinning of hair and eventually loss of hair in the front of the scalp. This cannot usually be treated by medication.
  2. Medications and hormonal changes. Hormonal changes in the body can also trigger hair loss in some people. Sometimes, these hormonal changes can happen due to certain medications, especially cancer drugs and anti-depressants. Loss of hair might reduce or stop completely once you stop the medication.
  3. Nutrition. Proper diet and nutrition is as important for healthy hair as it is for your entire body. Improper or poor diet or eating very few food products rich in vitamin E can also result in weak hair, which eventually falls.
  4. Stress and trauma. Sometimes, a lot of stress due to everyday mayhem or due to a traumatic event can also result in several hormonal changes, which can lead to loss of hair. Practicing healthy ways to manage stress is the only way to reduce hair loss due to this factor.
