Varicose veins are often painful and can adversely affect your daily life. But, you don't have to suffer the various symptoms associated with varicose veins. Sclerotherapy can be used to completely rid you of varicose veins and has been used since 1930s.

About Sclerotherapy

The procedure: Sclerotherapy is a procedure that involves injecting a solution (like a salt solution) directly into the vein using a needle. Depending on the vein, you may find yourself in a small amount of discomfort. You may feel a burning sensation or you may get cramps, but the discomfort doesn't last long. The blood vessel lining gets irritated by the solution, swells, and clots. Over time, it is converted into scar tissue, which gradually fades away. You may require only one session of sclerotherapy or you may require more. This depends on your individual condition. The procedure takes place in the doctor's office and takes around 15 minutes. It is performed by a dermatologist.  It is a non-invasive alternative to surgical methods for dealing with varicose veins.

Post surgery: After the procedure, you are restricted from strenuous physical activities for a few days, but you will be able to resume your other daily activities right away. Note that larger veins may take a lot of time to be completely removed. Sometimes, you may face certain side effects like itching and bruising, and raised and reddish areas around the treated veins. You may also have brown spots or lines around the treated veins. New, tiny veins can appear near the site of treatment; they may appear at any time after the treatment but they will generally go away within a few months. Sometimes, however, you may face more adverse side effects that will require you to visit your doctor. These include sudden swelling of leg and ulcer formation around the site of treatment. Before treatment, you should also talk to your doctor about possible allergic reactions to the solution being used.
